LED displays come in a variety of sizes and shapes and the limit is technically non-existent. It can be quite overwhelming to choose among these sizes and choosing one randomly is also a big mistake. One thing you can do is to use an LED screen resolution calculator to help you figure it out. If you want to learn more about this and acquire additional knowledge, you can learn about computing for the LED screen size and resolution.

Before diving into everything vital to learning how to calculate LED resolution and sizes, make sure that you have the time to learn about the figures. You have three options when getting the ideal size and resolution of the LED screen you’re going to use. You can do one of the following:

  1. Ask for the advice of your chosen LED display supplier
  2. Use a ready-made LED screen size calculator
  3. Manually calculate the LED screen size and resolution

There are existing LED screen size charts available online but it might be difficult to use that if you’re customizing your screen. Once you’ve decided to work hard to understand how to compute these figures, make sure you have the time for it.

Why Compute for the LED Screen Size and Resolution?

Calculating the LED screen size and resolution, with or without an LED screen resolution calculator, is highly relevant if you want to get the best out of the purchase of your LED display. If you want your investment to be worth its value when you purchase your LED screens, you have to choose the perfect size and resolution.

You need to choose the right size and resolution for your LED screen for the following reasons:

  • To experience high-quality images and videos
  • To make sure that everyone who needs to see the screen gets to see it
  • To avoid wasting money by choosing a size of the LED display that won’t maximize its functionalities
  • To get an exact number of panels you will need for your project
  • To use the right resolution for the brightness and environment of the venue
  • To match your budget with the best LED screen resolution you can use

Computing LED Screen Resolution and Size

You can always use an LED screen resolution calculator to make things more convenient but several factors might influence your choice in the first place. Some of these include the following:

  • Space – When measuring the size and resolution of LED screens, the space where you plan to install the screen needs to be considered. What are the sizes that can fit in the location of installation? How large is the venue and where will the people stay? These are some of the questions you need answering.
  • Viewing Distance – This refers to the distance between the screen and the people who will be viewing the LED display. By considering this aspect, you will make sure that the LED screen is clear and visible to your target viewers.
  • Application – There are resolution and pixel pitches designed for outdoor LED displays and specific ones dedicated to indoor applications. To make it an easy choice to the point that you may skip having to use an LED screen resolution calculator, you can just choose based on indoor or outdoor usage.

If you don’t want to use an LED screen size calculator, you can do so by just skimming into an LED screen size chart. The downside to using this method is that you’re pretty limited with what’s available on the chart. You won’t have much room for customization, especially if you’re working on an LED screen with an irregular shape.

LED Modules size, resolution, and quantity

When it comes to measuring LED screen sizes, two aspects of LED displays are often taken into account – LED modules and LED cabinets. With LED modules, four elements may be measured and calculated, including their physical sizes, pixel pitch, resolution, and the number of modules you might need for the project. Using an LED screen resolution calculator may be a convenient way you can get these measurements but it would be an awesome idea to know how they got the numbers.

Pixel pitch of LED modules

The pixel pitch refers to the distance between two adjacent lamps on the LED module. It can be measured with a caliper, or the pixel pitch can be obtained by calculation.

To calculate the LED module pixel pitch, you first need to know the LED module size (Measurement) or the number of lamps (can be obtained by counting)

P2.5 outdoor fixed led module

Pixel pitch=Module length size ÷ number of lamps in module length;

Pixel pitch=Module Height size ÷ number of lamps in module height

For example, we measured the length of a module is 320mm, and the number of lamps in the length was 64 dots. The pixel pitch = Module length size ÷ number of lamps in module length = 320mm ÷ 64dots=5mm, so the calculated pixel pitch is P5

LED module resolution calculation

The resolution of the LED module can be obtained by counting, the number of length LEDs x the number of height LEDs = LED module resolution.

At the same time, it also can be by calculation, to calculate the resolution of the LED module, we first need to know the length and height dimensions and the pixel pitch of the LED module. Both of these two items can be obtained by measurement, the specific calculation formula is as follows:

The number of lamps in the length of the LED module = LED module length ÷ pixel pitch

The number of lamps in the height of the LED module = LED module height ÷ pixel pitch

LED module resolution=The number of lamps in the length of the LED module x The number of lamps in the height of the LED module

We use the P8 LED module 320x160mm as an example, the module resolution is calculated as follows:
The number of lamps in the length of the LED module = LED module length ÷ pixel pitch=320mm ÷ 8mm=40dots;
The number of lamps in the height of the LED module = LED module height ÷ pixel pitch=160mm ÷ 8mm=20dots;
LED module resolution =The number of lamps in the length of the LED module x The number of lamps in the height of the LED module= 40 dots x 20 dots =800 dots / LED module.

Calculate the LED Modules Number of LED display

When calculating how many LED modules you will need for your project, there are two aspects you can use. You can either use the length or the height measurements of the LED display and the LED module. You can measure LED screen sizes in inches but some may use meters in the mix. So make sure you convert them when necessary.

The formula for getting the quantity of LED modules you will need is the following:

  • LED display length ÷ LED module length = number of LED modules needed in length
  • LED display height ÷ LED module height = number of LED modules needed in height
  • LED module quantity = Number of LED modules needed in length x number of LED modules needed in height

Here are some of the examples P3.91 outdoor LED module (width=height=250mm=0.25m):

  • 4 meters (LED display length) ÷ 0.25 meters (LED module length) = 16 (quantity of LED modules in length)
  • 3 meters (LED display height) ÷ 0.25 meters (LED module height) = 12 (quantity of LED modules in height)
  • LED module quantity=16 (quantity of LED modules in length) x 12 (quantity of LED modules in height) = 192 pcs

LED cabinet size, resolution, and quantity

The LED cabinet is the structure that carries and protects the LED module. While you might not need an LED screen resolution calculator for this task, you might want to get a regular calculator to help you. If you want to do it on your own, here is the formula you can use to get the quantity of cabinet you will need:

LED cabinet size

The size of the LED cabinet can be obtained directly through a ruler or calculated, but we need the number of LED modules by length and height for a single cabinet and the length and height of the module.

  • Cabinet width = LED modules length x quantity of LED modules in width;
  • Cabinet height = LED modules height x quantity of LED modules in height.

For example, the length of a single module of P10 is 320mm, the height is 160mm, the number of length modules of a single cabinet is 3 pcs, and the number of height modules is 6 pcs.

  • Cabinet width = 320mm(led module length) x 3pcs (number of length module)=960mm;
  • Cabinet width = 160mm(led module length) x 6pcs (number of length module)=960mm;

Standard cabinet size

The LED cabinet size is an integer multiple of a single LED module. The LED cabinet size is also based on the load of the power supply and receiving card, the weight of a single cabinet, and the cost-effectiveness of a single cabinet. The recommended standard cabinet sizes for various pixel pitches are as follows:

cabinet size(mm)LED module size(mm)Pixel pitch
960×960320×160P2.5,P3.3,P3.076,P3.3,P4,P5,P6.6,P8,P10,P16,P20
960×960192×192P3,P6
960×960320×320P4, P5, P5.33, P6.67, P8, P10
1024×1024256×128P4, P8
500×500250×250P2.6, P2.976, P3.91, P4.81
500×1000250×250P2.6, P2.976, P3.91, P4.81

LED cabinet resolution

There are two calculation methods for single cabinet resolution:

1. The length, height, and pixel pitch of a single cabinet are known, We can calculate the cabinet resolution as follows:

  • Cabinet length lamps = cabinet length ÷ pixel pitch;
  • Cabinet height lamps = cabinet height ÷ pixel pitch;
  • Cabinet resolution = cabinet length lamps x cabinet height lamps;

For example: a single cabinet is 960mm long, and 960mm high, and the pixel pitch is 10mm. The calculation process is as follows:

  • Cabinet length lamps=960mm(cabinet length) ÷ 10mm(pixel pitch)=96 dots;
  • Cabinet height lamps =960mm(cabinet height) ÷ 10mm(pixel pitch)=96 dots;
  • Cabinet resolution = 96 dots x 96 dots = 9,216 dots.

2. When we know the number of LED module length lamps, LED module width lamps, the number of modules in the cabinet length, and the number of modules in the cabinet height, we can use the following formula to calculate the cabinet resolution

  • Cabinet length lamps =LED module length lamps x LED module length quantity in the cabinet;
  • Cabinet height lamps = LED module height lamps x LED module height quantity in the cabinet;
  • Cabinet resolution = cabinet length lamps x cabinet height lamps;

For example, The P10 LED module has 32 lamps in length and 16 in height, but the number of modules in cabinet length is 3 and the number of height modules is 6. The calculation process is as follows:

  • Cabinet length lamps=32dots(LED module length lamps) x 3pcs(LED module length quantity)=96 dots;
  • Cabinet height lamps =16dots(LED module height lamps) x 6pcs(LED module height quantity)=96 dots;
  • Cabinet resolution = 96 dots x 96 dots = 9,216 dots.

LED module quantity in the cabinet calculation

The number of single cabinet modules can be obtained by counting directly, or of course using calculation methods, as shown below:

  • Cabinet length LED module quantity = cabinet length ÷ LED module length;
  • Cabinet height LED module quantity = cabinet height ÷ LED module height;
  • LED modules quantity of 1 cabinet = Cabinet length LED module quantity x Cabinet height LED module quantity;

For example, the cabinet size is 1024mm long x 1024mm high, the length of the P4 LED module is 256mm, and the height is 128mm. The calculation process is as follows:

  • Cabinet length LED module quantity = 1024mm(cabinet length) ÷ 256mm(LED module length)=4pcs;
  • Cabinet height LED module quantity = 1024mm(cabinet height) ÷ 128mm(LED module height)=8pcs;
  • LED modules quantity of 1 cabinet = 4pcs x 8pcs=32pcs;

LED display cabinet quantity calculation

  • LED display length cabinets quantity = LED display length ÷ cabinet length;
  • LED display height cabinets quantity = LED display height ÷ cabinet height;
  • LED display cabinets quantity = LED display length cabinets quantity x LED display height cabinets quantity;

For example, the LED display screen is 3.84m long, and 2.88m high, and the cabinet length and width are both 960mm (0.96m). The calculation process is as follows:

  • LED display length cabinets quantity = 3.84m( LED display length) ÷ 0.96m(cabinet length)=4pcs;
  • LED display height cabinets quantity =2.88m(LED display height) ÷ 0.96m(cabinet height)=3pcs;
  • LED display cabinets quantity = LED display length cabinets quantity x LED display height cabinets quantity=4pcs x 3pcs=12pcs;

Calculate LED display Sizes and Resolution

There are standard sizes you will come across in many LED display suppliers. If you are working on a customized LED screen project, you may need an LED screen resolution calculator and LED screen size calculator to help you. When it comes to sizes, the latter will be more helpful for you.

When it comes to LED display sizes by LED modules, you will need the following elements:

  • Quantity of LED modules in height
  • LED module height
  • Quantity of LED modules in length
  • LED module length

Here is the formula you can follow:

  • LED Display Length = Quantity of LED modules in length × LED module length
  • LED Display Height = Quantity of LED modules in height × LED module height
  • LED Display Size =LED Display Length × LED Display Height

Example:

  • 13 (Quantity of LED modules in length) × 0.32 m (LED module length) = 4.16m (Display Length)
  • 19 (Quantity of LED modules in height) × 0.16 m (LED module height) = 3.04m (Display Height)
  • LED Display Size = 4.16 meters x 3.04 meters (12.65 m²)

led screen size calculator by LED cabinet size and quantity

When you know the arrangement of the cabinets and the size of the cabinets, the size of the LED display can be calculated from them, The specific calculation method is as follows:

  • LED Display Length = Quantity of LED cabinets in length × LED cabinet length
  • LED Display Height = Quantity of LED cabinets in height × LED cabinet height
  • LED Display Size =LED Display Length × LED Display Height

Example:

  • 4 (Quantity of LED cabinets in length) × 0.96 m (LED cabinet length) = 3.84m (Display Length)
  • 3 (Quantity of LED cabinets in height) × 0.96 m (LED cabinet height) = 2.88m (Display Height)
  • LED Display Size = 3.84 meters x 2.88 meters =11.06 m²

led screen size calculator by resolution and pixel pitch

When we know the resolution and pixel pitch of the LED display, you can also calculate the size of the LED display. The calculation formula is as follows:

  • LED Display Length = number of lamps in LED display length × pixel pitch
  • LED Display Height = number of lamps in LED display height × pixel pitch
  • LED Display Size =LED Display Length × LED Display Height

For example:

LED display resolution length 1920 dots x height 1080 dots, the pixel pitch is 4mm.

  • LED display length=1920 dots(number of lamps in LED display length)x4mm(pixel pitch)=7680mm=7.68m;
  • LED display height = 1080 dots(number of lamps in LED display height ) x 4mm(pixel pitch)=4320mm=4.32m;
  • LED display size=7.68m(LED Display Length)x4.32m(LED Display Height)=33.18m2

LED Screen Resolution Calculator by the LED module

When you know the single LED module resolution, the length quantity, and the height quantity of the LED display modules, you can calculate the resolution of the LED display. The calculation formula is as follows:

  • LED Display Length dots = number of LED modules in length × led module length dots;
  • LED Display Height dots = number of LED modules in height × led module height dots;
  • LED Display resolution =LED Display Length dots × LED Display Height dots;

Example:

P10 led module resolution length 32dots x height 16dots, LED display length module number 12, height LED module number 18, the process of calculating the LED display resolution is as follows:

  • LED Display Length dots = 12pcs (number of LED modules in length) ×32dots( led module length dots)=384 dots;
  • LED Display Height dots = 18pcs (number of led modules in height) × 16dots( led module height dots)=288 dots;
  • LED Display resolution =384 dots(LED Display Length dots) × 288dots(LED Display Height dots)=110,592dots;

LED Screen Resolution Calculator by LED cabinet

When you know the cabinet quantity in length and height of the LED display, the number of LED cabinets, and the number of lamps in the cabinet length and height, you can calculate the resolution of the LED display through the following formula

  • LED Display Length dots = number of LED cabinets in length × led cabinet length dots;
  • LED Display Height dots = number of LED cabinets in height × led cabinet height dots;
  • LED Display resolution =LED Display Length dots × LED Display Height dots;

Example:

When you know the resolution of the P10 LED cabinet, which is 96 dots long x 96 dots high, and the LED display is 4 cabinets long and 3 cabinets high, the LED display resolution is calculated as follows:

  • LED Display Length dots = 4pcs (number of LED cabinets in length) × 96dots ( led cabinet length dots)=384 dots;
  • LED Display Height dots = 3pcs (number of LED cabinets in height) × 96 dots (led cabinet height dots)=288 dots;
  • LED Display resolution =384 dots (LED Display Length dots) × 288dots(LED Display Height dots)=110,592dots;

LED Screen Resolution Calculator by Pixel pitch

If you know the length, height, and pixel pitch of the LED display, then we can easily calculate the LED display resolution. The calculation formula is as follows:

  • LED Display Length dots = LED display length × pixel pitch;
  • LED Display Height dots = LED display height × pixel pitch;
  • LED Display resolution =LED Display Length dots × LED Display Height dots;

For example, We know the following elements:

  • LED display width 4.8m=4800mm;
  • LED display height 3.84m=3840mm;
  • Pixel pitch 10mm
  • LED Display Length dots = 4800mm (LED display length) × 10mm (pixel pitch)=480dots;
  • LED Display Height dots = 3840mm (LED display height) × 10mm (pixel pitch)=384dots;
  • LED Display resolution =480dots(LED Display Length dots) ×384dots (LED Display Height dots)=184,320 dots;

LED cabinet, module quantity calculation example

Before calculating, we have to master the unit conversion between feet, inches, meters, and millimeters first.

  • 1 inch=25.4mm=0.0254meter
  • 1 feet=304.8mm=0.3048meter

Here are the given factors for a P8 LED Display Screen size width of 12.6 feet x height of 9.45feet, LED module size is 320x160mm, with an outdoor LED cabinet size of 960 x 960 mm):

  • Total LED Display Length x height=3.84m x 2.88m;
  • LED screen sizes in inches =(led display length ÷0.0254) x (led display height ÷0.0254) = length (3.84m ÷0.0254) x height(2.88m÷0.0254)=length151.18inch x height113.39inch;
  • LED Module Length =320mm= 0.32 meter
  • LED Module Height =160mm= 0.16 meter
  • Cabinet Length =960mm= 0.96 meter
  • Cabinet Height = 960mm=0.96 meter

Quantity of LED Module

Quantity of LED Modules in Cabinet

  • 0.96 meter (Cabinet length) ÷ 0.32 meter (LED module length) = 3 pieces (Quantity of LED module in each cabinet in length)
  • 0.96 meter (Cabinet height) ÷ 0.16 meter (LED module height) = 6 pieces (Quantity of LED module in each cabinet in height)

Quantity of LED Cabinets

  • 12 pieces (Quantity of LED screen module in length) ÷ 3 pieces (Quantity of LED module in each cabinet in length) =4 pieces (Quantity of LED cabinets in length)
  • 18 pieces (Quantity of LED screen module in height) ÷ 6 pieces (Quantity of LED module in each cabinet in height) = 3 pieces (Quantity of LED cabinets in height)

This only means that the cabinet quantity you will need is 4 pieces in length and 3 pieces in height.

Pixels per square meter calculate

Pixels per square meter usually refers to the number of lamps within 1 square meter. The more the number, the higher the pixels, and the better the LED display effect. You can calculate the resolution through the following formula:

Resolution=Pixels per square meter=(1000 ÷ pixel pitch) x (1000 ÷ pixel pitch) =10 6 ÷ pixel pitch2

  • P2.5 resolution= P2.5 pixels per square meter=10 6 ÷ 6.25 (pixel pitch2)=160,000 dots / sqm;
  • P3 resolution= P3 pixels per square meter=10 6 ÷ 9 (pixel pitch2)=111,111 dots / sqm;
  • P4 resolution= P4 pixels per square meter=10 6 ÷ 16 (pixel pitch2)=62,500 dots / sqm;
  • P5 resolution= P5 pixels per square meter=10 6 ÷ 25 (pixel pitch2)=40,000 dots / sqm;
  • P6 resolution= P6 pixels per square meter=10 6 ÷ 36 (pixel pitch2)=27,777 dots / sqm;
  • P8 resolution= P8 pixels per square meter=10 6 ÷ 64 (pixel pitch2)=15,625 dots / sqm;
  • P10 resolution= P10 pixels per square meter=10 6 ÷ 100 (pixel pitch2)=10,000 dots / sqm;
